Built Environment

Welcome to the Austropex Built Environment page

There are multiple challenges associated with the planning, design, construction and operation of buildings and infrastructure in tropical environments as compared to other climatic environments.

This includes being able to deal with and anticipate the impact of extreme weather events from cyclones, high rainfall events and humidity and to deal with the logistical challenges of prolonged wet seasons.

The professionals included in this database have the knowledge and experience to help successfully deliver and manage projects in tropical environments.

Austropex Conference Built Environment Session

This session is brought to you James Cook University and the Tropical Green Build Network

Building Sustainable Futures

The main purpose of this session is to define, differentiate and point to commercial opportunities in the Tropical Built Environment in Far North Queensland and beyond.

In particular, the session aims to:

DEFINE what constitutes ‘tropical’ expertise in a FNQ context (e.g., building to accommodate sun/shade, the use of light weight materials, incorporating outdoor space, cyclone resistance, building in remote communities, etc).

SITUATE the tropical built environment within a global environmental context, and consider how the green building agenda can be successfully incorporated into what we do in FNQ (e.g. alternative energy, water management, embodied and recycled materials, etc)

IDENTIFY opportunities to market and commercialise tropical expertise in the broader Asia-Pacific region.
